A SUCCESSFUL South Tyneside businessman was honoured by his former university last night.

Neil Stephenson is chief executive officer (CEO) of the Onyx Group, one of the UK's top technology solutions providers, which employs 100 staff.

Mr Stephenson, from South Shields, was awarded the prestigious Alumni
Enterprise Award by the University of Sunderland, where he studied for a degree in electronics and computing between 1990 and 1993.

The 37-year-old enjoyed a rapid ascent with Onyx after joining as sales and marketing director, progressing to CEO and spearheading a period of rapid growth, helping quadruple the group's turnover from £3m to £12m in just two years.

Mr Stephenson, speaking at the Blueprint Business Planning Awards ceremony, said: "I am delighted to have received recognition for my achievements at the Onyx Group, and it is a pleasure to return to the University of Sunderland to receive this award."

The Onyx Group also has offices in Tyneside and Teesside, Gateshead and Newcastle.
