HAVING a baby is an exciting time for mums and their families.
There's lots of planning to do and things to get sorted, from getting a pushchair to stocking up on nappies – and there are also bills to pay.
That is why I have supported our Labour Government's action to give real help to families.
As part o
f this, we are giving a cash boost of £190 that mums-to-be can claim.
From April, mums-to-be who are at least 25 weeks pregnant will get a tax-free payment from the Government.
The payment is called a health in pregnancy grant. It is a one-off payment of £190 for each pregnancy.
It won't make any difference to tax credits or your benefits, and every mum in South Shields will get the same amount.
The payment will go directly into bank or building society accounts.
To get the grant, mums-to-be will need to get a claim form from their midwife or doctor.
Make sure they fill in their part of the form and sign it before giving it to you.
You then need to send your form back within 31 days of your midwife or doctor signing it.
To make it easier, you can get a free text message or e-mail reminder to help you remember to claim if you are not 25 weeks pregnant yet.
To sign up, click on this link. This cash boost will make a real difference.
I am also a great supporter of the Sure Start scheme, which helps new mums and dads.
I recently visited the Biddick Hall and Whiteleas Sure Start scheme and was very impressed by the dedication of the staff.
There is loads going on in our local Sure Starts, from practical advice and support to fun activities.
I would like to thank all those who work in Sure Start centres in South Shields – you are doing a great job.
The efforts you put in are greatly appreciated.
