IN the first big result of tonight's election, South Shields businessman Ahmed Khan ousted former mayor John Wood.
He received 1,388 votes, more than 400 more than sitting councillor John Wood's 955.
The result makes up for Mr Khan's disappointment at last year's election, where he was narrowly defeated in the same Beacon and Bents ward, losing to Labour's Audrey Macmillan by just 33 votes.
He took legal action in an attempt to examine rejected ballot boxes and it was later discovered the contents of 18 of the boxes had been lost.
John Wood is a former mayor of South Tyneside and a member of the council's decision-making cabinet.
He is also a member of South Tyneside Homes board, which is helping oversee a multi-million pound revitalisation of the borough's housing stock.
