SOUTH Shields rugby star David Wilson admits he will fulfil a 'lifelong ambition' when he makes his England Test debut tomorrow.
The tight-head prop will run out at Old Trafford against Argentina, determined to produce an influential performance against a powerful Puma pack.

"I am massively excited and looking forward to it," he said.

"They are a big physical pack. You have seen a lot of their players in the Premiership. This is a massive chance.

"It has been a lifelong ambition to play for England, so to be in this game and get a cap for it is fantastic."

Wilson, 24, made his first senior start for England against the Barbarians at Twickenham last weekend and impressed Martin Johnson enough at Twickenham to be selected ahead of the vastly more experienced Julian White.

With Phil Vickery and White both nearer the end of their careers than the beginning, Wilson has been given the first opportunity to lay down a long-term challenge for the England tight-head jersey.

"I have got the biggest opportunity," he said.

"It was quite emotional last week. I felt I scrummaged all right but it was a disorganised Barbarians team. It was my first time and I was pleased to play.

"There is a chance for people to come through. There is a lot of competition. Alex Corbisiero from Irish is a decent prop."

Wilson is heading to Bath from Newcastle this summer after growing frustrated that his front row development was being stunted by the immense frame of former New Zealand prop Carl Hayman.

There are few better props to learn from, but Wilson needs regular first-team rugby, and that desire has prompted a summer move from his home-town club to Bath.

"Carl is at the club. He starts week in and week out. He is a world beater. Hopefully I will get more rugby at Bath. That is the way to progress," he said.

"Carl has been through a few things. You learn a lot off him. Everybody has got their own technique, and you pick bits off everybody.

"You know in your own mind if you are not playing it is frustrating. If you haven't played for two years you are not a rugby player.

"You have got to find rugby somewhere, and hopefully at Bath I will get a fair few games."
