MACBETH is usually studied by secondary school pupils preparing for exams.
But a South Shields primary school took on the challenge of performing the play, with Alexander Holt in the leading role.
The 10-year-old gave such a good account of himself, his teacher has nominated him for Young Performer of the Year in the Pride of South Tyneside Awards.
Elaine Carrahar, who directed the production at St Gregory's RC Primary, said: "Alexander gave an outstanding performance in the role of Macbeth.
"Having studied the story and play in class, he prepared himself thoroughly for his audition.
"This challenging role required him to learn and deliver a huge script, to interact with several characters and to sing a number of solos and duets.
"He delivered a performance that gained him tremendous admiration and respect from his peers, his teachers and the audience he performed to.
"Rarely have I seen in my 24 years of teaching a child with such natural ability in singing and acting. He has made a lasting impression on me and everyone who has seen the show."
Alexander's mum, Christina, from Tynedale Road, South Shields, said the play was "superb".
She added: "I was totally overwhelmed and I still am. We're so honoured that the school has put him forward for the award.
"They worked so hard for it. It's all thanks to his teacher. The work she put in was above and beyond the call of duty."
Alexander could be one of up to 16 Young Performer(s) of the Year nominees who will get to appear on stage in the Pride Talent Show, at the Customs House, on Wednesday, April 23.
The show starts at 7.30pm, and tickets, priced £5 or £3 concessions, are on sale now from the box office, either in person, or on 454 1234.
The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.
Ten awards are up for grabs – Carer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Greener South Tyneside, Sporting Excellence, Top Achiever, Child of Courage, Good Friend/Neighbour, Role Model of the Year, Young Performer(s) of the Year and a Judges' Special Award.
The closing date has now passed for nominations.
Three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony, which will take place at the Customs House, in Mill Dam, South Shields, on Thursday, July 10.
