THE axing of a Hebburn post office was blasted by town councillors today.
Royal Mail has announced Victoria Road West Post Office is on its closure list.

It is one of four South Tyneside branches earmarked for closure, following an announcement earlier today.

But Coun John McCabe, chairman of Hebburn community area forum, attacked the move, saying: "We knew this office was under threat, but I don't approve of the way Royal Mail is handling these closures, which I feel are being carried out by stealth.

"And although I'm a Labour member, I don't support the Labour Government on this.

"This office is a community facility, and it will mean old people will have to walk from the Hartleyburn area to Hebburn town centre or elsewhere to access these services.

"This is not good for the town, and all the Hebburn councillors are singing from the same hymn sheet on this issue, and oppose such closures."
