A SUMMER tournament will kick off the non-league football scene in South Tyneside – with a local charity set to benefit.
Hebburn Sports & Social Club, and Hebburn Reyrolle FC, will be hosting the first annual Tyne & Wear LGV Summer Cup on July 17-18.

The pre-season tournament is being held to promote non-league football in the borough, and to help forge links between the local sides.

The tournament offers two days of excellent football between Reyrolle, their Northern League neighbours Hebburn Town, Jarrow Roofing and
Wearside League outfit Jarrow FC.

The event also hopes to raise money for St Clare's Hospice.

It tournament will provide invaluable match time for the four sides as they warm up for the new season, and will give managers the chance to look at new players.

In particular, new Hebburn Town boss David Rush will see his men in action for the first time after he took over the reins from long-serving Tony Robinson at the end of last season. Roofing also have a new management structure in place, with former Birtley Town duo Dave Smith and Paul Bryson assisting Richie McLoughlin.

Tournament organisor Duncan Donnelly, from Reyrolle, said: "After speaking with the clubs involved I'm certain the tournament will be a success.

"We have done a lot of work to get this year's event up and running. This will not just be a one- off, we want to make it a annual tournament on the non-league calender.

"Hopefully, we can expand the tournament next year as we have already had requests to take part from other local clubs and sides from outside the area.

"Driver training company Tyne & Wear LGV, who have been supporting local football for a number years, have kindly agreed to sponsor the event this year, and potentially in forthcoming years as well.

"With the support of our sponsor, and the community who we hope will come out and support our local sides, I am sure the Tyne & Wear LGV Summer Cup will go from strength to strength."

There will be two semi-finals on the 17th, and then a third-place play-off and the final the following day.

Full bar and catering facilities will be open at the Sports and Social Club for supporters.

Anyone wanting more details on the tournament can contact Duncan on 07979 531633.

Reyrolle, who play in the Northern Alliance, start pre-season training on Tuesday at 6pm. Any potential new players who are wanting to play football are welcome to attend. Meet at the Hebburn Sports and Social Club at 5.50pm or contact manager Mark Collingwood on 07801 998953.
