Edgar yesterday signed a four-year contract with Premier League newcomers Burnley after leaving Newcastle United.

While the 22-year-old – whose Jarrow-born father Eddie played one game in goal for Newcastle – was out of contract, United will be entitled to compensation, as he is under 24.

Edgar – who turned down a new deal at St James's Park – will be competing for a place in the heart of Owen Coyle's defence alongside Turf Moor captain Steve Caldwell, the former Newcastle and Sunderland centre-half.

And his agent Barry MacLean said: "I'd say he's pretty happy.

"We are looking for him to play regularly at this stage of his career.

"For him to play regular first-team football is critical for him."

However, Edgar – who made 23 appearances for United, scoring twice – will miss Burnley's opener away to Stoke City.

He was sent off at Villa Park on the final day of last season as Newcastle succumbed to relegation.
