MICHAEL Owen could be set for a sensational move to Manchester United which could rescue his ailing career.
The 29-year-old's contract at Newcastle United expired at midnight on Tuesday, and he is free to leave.
And today the Premier League champions are being touted as unlikely saviours for the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker's career.
Bookmakers have dramatically slashed their odds that Owen is heading to Old Trafford, and United have refused to deny the reports.
Signing Owen would be a big gamble for Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson, because of his injury record over the past four years, and the belief of many observers that he is past his best.
Man United are thought to be likely to offer him a low basic salary, with bonuses based on his appearances and goals.
Owen's advisers have sent out a glossy brochure touting him to clubs, and Everton, Hull and Stoke are thought to be interested.
