CROWDS stood in pouring rain to watch a spectacular display of light projections and fireworks to launch Sunderland's £20m Aquatic Centre.
Wet weather and biting cold did not deter the 5,000-strong audience who gathered outside the new complex at Stadium Park last night.

And the centre opened its doors to the public at 6.30am today, welcoming the first visitors.

An acrobat kicked off last night's spectacular before a 30-minute light and firework display, with images and sounds of Sunderland's maritime history.

Robin Morley, director of Magnet Events, who organised the £140,000 spectacular, said: "The idea was to create a wow-factor – an event which brought together all the pictures and images around water and people."

The Aquatic Centre, which features a 50m Olympic pool, diving tank and Wellness Centre gym, was chosen to feature in the pre-games training camp guide for the London 2012 Olympics, along with Sunderland University.

Before the outdoor launch spectacular, members of swimming clubs and community groups had joined VIP guests at a special indoor swimming and diving extravaganza.

The indoor event featured a video message from Olympic organiser and retired athlete Lord Coe, who visited the pool while it was under construction.

He said: "This will be a fantastic facility for local people.

"It will form a very serious part of the pre-games training camp guide."

There were also speeches from Sunderland Council leader Bob Symonds and the city's Mayor, Les Scott.

Illuminating ... crowds enjoy a light show.

Speaking today, Coun Symonds said: "The rain didn't dampen spirits.

"It shows how much it means to the people of Sunderland to have a world-class facility that puts the city on the sporting map, but also is for everyone to use and enjoy."
