SOUTH Tyneside College has been lending a hand at the Gazette fashion show since it began.

For eight years the hair and beauty team at South Tyneside College have been making sure all our models are pristine when they hit the catwalk.

And this year, for their own shoot, they've taken inspiration from their location – the North East Air Museum in Sunderland.

They travelled back to the 1940s when the world was at war and the women looked like film stars.

Beauty lecturer Karen Cummings said: "One of the latest films, Edge of Love, is based in the 1940s. The hair, make-up and costumes are exquisite.

"There is a real 1940s influence in the shops at the moment with a modern and young feel.

"There's the floral dresses and real feminine chiffons, lace and frills and not forgetting the little black dress and the modern twist to the land girls look. The trench coat is this summer's must have.

"An essential for any young lady on her 16th birthday was for her father to buy her a string of pearls.

"If you look at all of the big fashion houses – including Dior and Chanel – chunky pearls are the in thing."

Students from the hair and beauty department will be making our models look just as gorgeous.

It not only looks great on their CV, but the fashion show is something the students always look forward to.

And the college always puts on their own showcase which is bound to wow.

The college offers all kinds of treatments at cut-salon prices. For details, contact 427 3900.

Fashion High-fliers is being held on Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26, at the Customs House, Mill Dam, South Shields.

It will raise money for our two charities, the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund, and Cancer Connections.

Its main sponsors are Pet-Supermarket and Thompsons Solicitors. Asda in Boldon, Colman's, Beamish Hall, Barbour, Desire By Debenhams, L'Amour Bridal, Port of Tyne, South Tyneside College, Specsavers and Tavistock Leisure, are also sponsoring the event.

Tickets for Fashion High-fliers are now on sale, priced £10, including a goody bag and great prizes up for grabs.

For tickets and further details of the show, call the Customs House box office on 454 1234.
