A FAMOUS South Tyneside clothing firm saw off tough competition to clinch a national award for brand promotion.
J Barbour & Sons Ltd noted for its highly-popular waxed jackets worn by members of the Royal Family, won the Best Brand Award at the Sunday Times PricewaterhouseCoopers Profit Track 100 Awards.

The Simonside-based company, in South Shields, company beat rival entries from Virgin Trains and others to win the prestigious honour.

Dame Margaret Barbour, company chairwoman, said: "I am delighted to receive this award on behalf of everyone at Barbour.

"It is a tremendous honour to be recognised in this way, particularly in the current retail climate."

Founded in 1894, and always based in South Shields, Barbour is a fourth generation family company, whose profits have continued to rise, despite the recession.
