Angry residents feel ‘betrayed’ over club

BACKING RESIDENTS ... Coun Emma Lewell-Buck outside the former Jarrow Ex-Servicemens Club.

residents have slammed council chiefs and police after a South Tyneside club was allowed to expand the number of functions it holds.

They warn the move, at the newly-renamed Tunnel Club in Jarrow, will drastically increase anti-social behaviour on their doorsteps.

More than 30 householders, grouped under the banner Save Our Streets, and backed by councillors, including Emma Lewell-Buck, had opposed the plans.

Despite that, South Tyneside Council’s licensing sub-committee has passed the proposals for the former Jarrow Ex-Servicemen’s Club in North Street.

It will see the club’s new boss, Steven Ski and his Washington-based Extrader consortium, put on one function for non-club members a week.

Residents say they expect what they describe as the already high level of anti-social behaviour outside the private members’ venue – including drunken brawls and noise – to escalate.

A Save Our Streets spokeswoman vowed to appeal the decision.

She said: “We feel bewildered and betrayed that the council has disregarded the objections.

“We feel completely betrayed by the police. They have ignored the magnitude of this.

“It is reasonable to assume that the anti-social behaviour we endure is more likely, rather than less likely, to continue.”

Residents insist police figures of one assault outside the premises, one complaint of anti-social behaviour and three of noise since January last year, are incorrect. They claim there have been more than 32 criminal acts in two years in surrounding streets, made up of many newly-built properties.

Police chief inspector, Brian Walker, said the new premises licence allowed police full access to the club.

He added: “We take on board the strength of feeling among residents. We will continue to monitor the premises to make sure there is no adverse impact on crime and disorder.

“Both the police and local authority have a duty to deal with issues of anti-social behaviour and crime. We will continue to work with our partners to ensure this is the case.”

Mr Ski, 39, from Hebburn, said: “We want to be a good neighbour. We will do all we can to work with residents to ensure any problems are dealt with.

“We already hold member nights on Fridays, so it is only on Saturdays that we will be looking to hold other functions.”

I'm sorry but unless the club was built after these residents moved to the area I think they have very little to complain about.

No doubt the people commenting that there is no problem or that residents should expect trouble have obviously not had their children woken by fights tumbling out of the club in to the street, have not had to witness event-goers urinating in their gardens or being sick in front of their houses. The issues have been witnessed by residents as having emanated from the club, so nice try trying to blame the other pubs in the area but a freedom on information request confirms this is not the case! Residents do not have an issue with the working men's club, they have an issue with the events which result in up to 240 drunk people spilling out in to our streets and we are left to deal with the aftermath.

sorry there are four pubs in the immediate are , forgot to mention the long bar, do the maths, 6 complaints per establishment , 1 every two months and even this low number is disputed by the police, it is hardly the crime capital of the north this area is it

split the 32 complaints allegedly, between the three pubs and the one club and the area , and this makes it 8 complaints against each establishment, throw in jarrow shopping center which is also in the immediate area, and this should take the 8 alleged complaints about each establishment down even further, the housing estate is not exactly in the middle of dodge city as certain complainents would have us beleive

i have been a member of the jarrow x since 1973 and do indeed go every week,i have never in all my time as a member of th e above club seen much in the way of brawls at the above club, the x or the tunnel club was there way before they built the current houses , there is also a number of pubs in the area and the rowdy behavour could be spreading from these pubs, i understand the chairman of the x was receiving letters complaining about the alleged problems but these people were not even putting their names to these letters, although i do understand the name of one of the complainants has since come to light, it does seem strange that only the tunnel club has been mentioned when their is indeed three pubs within easy reach of this housing estate, which club or pub is next in the firing line , their is far worse places for noise and vilence than the tunnel club, for pitys sake people get a life

If you buy a house near an establishment that sells alcohol, then surely it must be obvious that some form of late night disturbance would occur. To complain about it after moving into the area is the typical attitude of people who buy a property and then think they own the whole road.

pardon me if I am wrong here but these premises have always been a local club for local people to enjoy, it was a club well before new houses where built on the surrounding grounds, if you buy a property next to a public house one would expect a degree of noise a thing that off-sets the fact that you live in a central part of town, rather than complain why not try and support your local business and enjoy the fact that unlike many clubs within south tyneside this one thanks to its current owners is making a go of it. The decision to grant the licence is a great peice of common sense winning over down with this sort of thing do gooders.

So Mr Ski wants to destroy our entire weekends, not just a Friday - that's very kind of him. The police have been asked why they have not reported the additional incidents residents are aware of - we are yet to receive a response...

what's reported to police and what is investigated aint the same. Why investigate if not successful??? makes figures look bad, investigate that which gives success,,,
