David Miliband: Tory errors will harm South Shields
OVER the last two weeks a lot of residents have raised the issue of NHS reform with me.
The question that a lot of people are asking is simple: does the current ‘listening exercise’ by the Government mean a real change in direction over NHS reforms?
With his speech last Monday David Cameron answered that question with an emphatic no, as his health advisor reportedly said the NHS “will be shown no mercy”.
And the stats are now stacking up against the reforms.
The Royal College of GPs, representing 42,000 family doctors, says the NHS disorganisation will cause “irreparable damage to the core values of the NHS”.
Health staff have been told that the timeline for reorganisation “remains unchanged”, despite David Cameron’s promise that he would stop and listen.
And the number of people waiting for more than six weeks for diagnostic tests rose by 2,800 month on month, and by 7,000 year on year.
It is only one part of a series of errors the Government is making that will directly affect South Shields.
Tuition fees are being trebled, VAT has increased, police numbers are being slashed and the NHS is being subjected to a chaotic reorganisation.
The claim of this Government to be governing in the national interest will ring hollow for people in South Shields.
Our economy has stopped growing, and the unfair cuts being imposed are hurting families, damaging the fabric of our communities, and risking opportunities for the next generation.
I understand that people didn’t vote for these backward mistakes, and I will continue to fight them in the corridors of Westminster.
