Have you got Business In You?

OVER the past week or so, Prime Minister David Cameron has launched a new campaign aiming to inspire people to start or grow their business.

The campaign encourages people to make this the year of enterprise by taking the leap to start up a business or grow an existing one.

Business In You helps make your business idea happen.

Whether you’re looking to test your ideas, or develop your financial and planning skills, it gives you the support and inspiration you need, highlighting real-life examples of success.

It also provides links to key business-support advice, pointing you to top tools available from Business Link, Start Up Britain and a whole range of partners.

There is also the idea that unused Government buildings across the country will be offered as office space at an extremely low cost.

I think it’s great to see positive steps being taken by this government to encourage entrepreneurial growth at a time when we need it most.

You can view David Cameron’s inspirational speech “What’s the business in you?” by clicking on this link.

In our region there is a fantastic event planned for February 16.

‘You are Coca Cola’ brings together a collection of exciting business people who have worked on some of the world’s largest and best-known brands, such as Virgin, Coca Cola and Starbucks.

For a marketeer it is a must, for an entrepreneur it is a must, and for anyone with a dream who wants to learn from the best, it is a must.

It promises to be a great evening with lots of learning and inspiration! You can find out more here.

This week I had the opportunity to see first hand some of the fantastic enterprising things schools and colleges in this region are doing.

I have to say it’s so encouraging to see young people pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and doing things such as pitching and negotiating with high-profile business people - something which can seem daunting even to the more experienced entrepreneur.

Our young people deserve credit for their fantastic achievements and attitude across the region.

Young people don’t get much good press, but I’m here to stand up and say well done to everyone who continues to defy the stereotypes and prove young people have so much good to offer!

I finish this week leaving you with a poem, that if only more people read and tried to follow, the world would be a better place. See you next week!

IF – Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you,

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too.

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise.

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim,

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster,

And treat those two impostors just the same.

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken,

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools.

If you can make one heap of all your winnings,

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings,

And never breathe a word about your loss.

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew,

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you,

Except the will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much.

If you can fill the unforgiving minute,

With 60 seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!
