Can you fill gap in town’s history?
GAP YEARS...but where was this taken in Shields?
OUR home towns are such familiar landscapes that we think we know them as well as we do our own faces.
But then something will come along that can throw all that into doubt. You’ve got to admit, this is the most intriguing photograph!
This has come to me from a reader and has recently been a hot topic of debate in a local shipyard.
There have been a few theories advanced, I gather, as to where this is in Shields, with its glimpse of the Town Hall clock in the background.
I have to say that I am 99 per cent certain I know where this has been taken from. You will, however, have to be over a certain age if you can remember when this unusual perspective could be seen, as I’d say the snap goes back between 35 and 40 years.
It was taken at a time when a lot of Shields was changing and a great deal of run down 19th century property was being cleared – though what originally occupied this gap, I’d have said, would have still been a striking feature today had it survived.
Drop me a line – e-mail, Twitter, whatever – and join the debate!

Friday, March 9, 2012 at 02:38 PMJanis I am going to the other side of Shields and am guessing this to be the old Greyhound Stadium on Horsley Hill Road, had that still been standing today I think it would have looked impressive. Please put us out of our misery and reveal the location.
