Hats the way it was back then!

HAT'S MY BOYS ... a Boldon Juniors side before the First World War.

HAT'S MY BOYS ... a Boldon Juniors side before the First World War.

THIS is a smashing photograph, albeit I find it rather a bitter-sweet one.

It’s another nice find by Kevin Blair, and is of a Boldon Juniors side during their 1911-1912 season.

He wondered if they might have been winners, at any time in the past, of the Robson Challenge Shield for schoolboy football, which was mentioned a while back.

Well, Boldon did win it several times, if I read things right, but that wasn’t until just before and after the Second World War.

What’s rather sweet about this picture in the first instance, I think, is that you find yourself wondering how much more of a man did you feel when you got to wear a really big hat.

But the date also gives you more sober pause for thought, because you can’t help but speculate how many of these boys, within a few short years, were going into battle on quite a different field of conflict.

Perhaps someone recognises a father or grandfather, and can say who else is on the photograph. It would be nice to know, too, what happened to them as the country moved towards The Great War.
