March to church in Hudson Street

IT'S lovely seeing all the drifts of crocuses which are popping up on verges and other green spaces at the moment.

They herald spring and, with it, Easter. Was that when this picture was taken?

This takes us back, I would think, to before the First World War and was taken in Hudson Street at Tyne Dock.

It comes from Kevin Blair, who's grateful to Patrick Brennan for his help in identifying it.

"The banner shows it's a church procession, having the words 'Suffer little children to come unto me'," says Kevin.

We wonder if their destination was the United Methodist Free Church in Hudson Street, but perhaps someone can shed a bit more light on that?

It's interesting, too, for what it shows of Hudson Street itself.

In the background is the Aberdeen House which was a draper's shop, belonging to Luke Scott.

Next to this was a 'shaving saloon,' while further down to the left was Boynton's newsagent's, with the old Royal Oak pub on the corner.

Looking at a trade directory of the period, off the picture to the right, at no 29, there was also 'J Riddle, chemist (and) Public Telephone'.
