River view a lovely reminder of past
BEFORE THE MAST ... the Admiral Rodney recalls the country at the height of its naval might.
NO, it wasn’t what became the Adam and Eve.
In fact it turns out that, in the Admiral Rodney pub, you have a brief but tantalising glimpse of the crowded old riverside at Shields at the height of Britain’s naval might.
You’ll perhaps recall that help was being sought to establish if this old pub name had links to the Adam and Eve at Laygate.
Had it been a forerunner of the bar, perhaps?
Well, the answer is no.
Other sources, it has since transpired – actually ships for sale advertisements of the era – have revealed, I’m told, that the Admiral Rodney was located on Long Row in Shields.
This was in 1785-1786, and the innkeeper was called Enoch Donkerley.
This was a period when the old town of Shields was still, essentially, one street running along the river from which, in the laying out of the Market Place, it had only just started to grow away.
Long Row was one of those old thoroughfares contiguous to Thrift Street and the location, at various times over the years, of other pubs such as the Berwick Arms, the Burnt House and the Railway Tavern.
