What do you know about the Villa boys?
LITTLE AND LARGE ... but who were Waldon Villa, seen here in the 1930s?
AFTER more than 70 years, it could be the small chap in the front, if he’s still with us, who holds the key to the puzzle of this picture.
It comes from reader Colin Gates and the man second from the left in the back row is his father, Robert Gates.
The side is Waldon Villa FC during their 1934-1935 season.
Who were Waldon Villa FC? Well we’re not entirely sure, but Colin believes that they may have played their games on what became known as the TDRI (Tyne Dock Railway Institute) ground at Simonside.
Tyne Dock Railway Institute was formed just after the end of the last war, to provide recreational facilities for railwaymen in Tyne Dock and District.
It used to be based at the old Ambulance Hall in Hudson Street.
Regrettably, I can’t find any record of the team in our archives.
But we do have the names of everyone on the picture.
In that back row, left to right, are A Coyne, R Gates, A Nelson, J Bainbridge, W Peat, G Young and J Benham.
Middle row: N Christie, J Tate, J Gates, M Burton, W Anderson and T Peat.
In the front are D Simpson, P Coyne and the player on the end was called Gunn.
All thoughts welcome.
