New councillor’s pledge to community
KEEPING IT LOCAL ... new Coun Linda Hemmer.
A NEW Jarrow councillor is already part and parcel of the local community.
Coun Linda Hemmer is the newly-elected Independent member for the Fellgate and Hedworth ward, which includes the Calf Close Estate.
Thanks to living in Hedworth for most of her life, Coun Hemmer said she has an intimate knowledge of the area, its needs and aspirations.
Coun Hemmer said: “I see my role as serving the whole community, including more than 6,000 adults alone, without counting children in the area.
“Hedworth has its own issues, as do Fellgate and Calf Close, and I hope to address all these needs. In whatever work I’ve done, I’ve tried to maximise the value to the local community.
“This is all about what the residents want, and how I can help to implement and support those needs.”
Coun Hemmer has a wealth of voluntary experience with Victim Support and the Listening Post.
She has also been involved in youth work and counselling and has relevant qualifications.
Until last November, Coun Hemmer worked as a community coach for South Tyneside Council, helping to boost employment opportunities for disabled people.
But she is probably better known for her association with Hedworth Residents’ Association, of which she was chairwoman for five years.
Coun Hemmer added: “I plan to work with the two sitting councillors for the good of the ward, helping to support initiatives like the Hedworth Action Plan, which has a themed approach to issues like youth projects and green schemes.
“I believe that we will only achieve anything in the ward with the involvement of local residents.”
