Traffic can't flow in town
I HAVE recently moved back to South Shields after 20 years living down south.
It's fantastic to be back. To be around my family, the amazing coastline and the people make me believe it was the right thing to do.
However, I am a great believer that the movement of people is like blood feeding the heart of a town, and the roads are the arteries.
For this reason, I feel South Shields is heading towards a cardiac arrest.
I cannot believe the amount of road humps, bus lanes and unnecessary traffic lights that are creating a problem that shouldn't be there.
Where do I start? The traffic lights at the bottom of the John Reid Road near Leam Lane. During the rush hour, yes they're probably required.
But at 11.30am, people are having to wait at a red light for no reason.
An article in the Gazette (February 16) spoke of the quality of air in Boldon Lane, near Stanhope Road, being below acceptable levels.
It's a four way traffic-light system which is totally uncalled for. The lights are causing the problem.
Apparently, the traffic flows better when the lights don't work.
If you're in Stanhope Road waiting to turn right at the top, here's some advice. Take some sandwiches, a good book and a shaver, because you'll be waiting a while.
A 24-hour bus lane on King George Road – what's all that about? I was travelling down there behind a car a few days ago doing 27mph at 11.30pm.
It was gone midnight by the time I got to John Reid Road, and all the time you have a completely empty lane sitting there.
I still spend a lot of time in London and they have bus lanes in The Strand, Piccadilly, Park Lane, but King George Road in South Shields – come on, who are you kidding?
The latest jewels in South Tyneside's crown must be the traffic lights near Marine Park.
They are causing no end of queues all the way along to the Littlehaven in one direction and Gypsy's Green in the other.
Why does every person in a position of power hate the motor car?
Instead of making things difficult for drivers, why doesn't the council try to make traffic flow?
