Shields pub gets a new lease of life
THREE CHEERS ... MP David Miliband, centre, pulls a pint at The Riverside with catering manager Ian Partridge and bar assistant Laura Short.
A WELL-KNOWN South Shields pub on the banks of the town’s historic Riverside is now officially open for business.
The Riverside pub, at the Mill Dam, was given a new lease of life in December last year after it was taken on by new owners.
Since then customers have been returning to the watering hole, including South Shields MP David Miliband, who called in earlier this month to officially reopen the pub.
Mr Miliband said: “The Mill Dam is a historic part of the South Shields Riverside. And traditionally it has been a good place to come and have a drink.
“It is nice to see some new owners breathing new life into the Riverside making it a place where people can come and meet.”
Since its revamp, the owners have introduced theme nights and played host to many popular comedians and bands.
The pub has also helped to boost the kitty of the Seaman’s Mission after the charity was hit by floods in December.
It was decided to host a fundraising night, with all proceeds going to the Mission.
Catering manager Ian Partridge said: “With all of the regeneration going on around the Riverside, we don’t want the Mill Dam to be left behind.
“It was great for us to have our local MP David Miliband call in and officially re-open the pub and show his support.”
Staff are now looking forward to what they hope will be a couple of bumper bank holiday weekends, beginning with the appearance of Bessie and the Zinc Buckets, tomorrow evening from 4pm.
The gig will be the first the band have played the area since their return from performing in the Swiss Alps. While on Sunday the pub will host its regular evening of karaoke from 7pm.
