Incinerators much better
I WAS disappointed at the tenor of the letter (Gazette, July 31) from Bryan Atkinson in his response to the article in the Gazette entitled "Incinerators not so bad" and the comments attributed to Coun Eddie McAtominey.
Coun McAtominey, having visited an energy from waste facility as part of a fact-finding tour, commented upon how the incineration process had technologically advanced both in building design and emission controls since the days when the old incinerator was operable at Middlefields, Tyne Dock.
Bryan will be aware that all gases produced during combustion are extensively cleaned to ensure that no toxins are emitted to the atmosphere.
Indeed, modern facilities create 99.8 per cent less emissions than the old ones. Their total emissions are only 0.2 per cent of the old incinerators.
Energy from waste plants use cutting edge environmental technology.
Finally, if we are to debate and consider future options and solutions to our waste problem through the pages of the media, then we need to do it in a constructive and informative manner.
One thing is certain on which we all agree; we cannot continue to landfill, as this produces methane, the greenhouse gas with the highest environmental impact, and these effects last for generations.
