Pig farming is inhumane
I'M sure most readers would have been horrified to hear about the motorway crash in County Durham last Thursday, and the horrific fire that resulted in the police having to shoot many injured pigs on an animal transporter.
Few of us who have travelled the nation's motorways could have failed to see these huge lorries, crammed full of animals, unaware that this is most likely their last journey – as almost all are bound for the slaughterhouse.
Pigs are fun-loving, inquisitive and intelligent animals, yet in Britain almost all of them are factory farmed.
Seventy per cent of British sows are forced to give birth in metal crates so small that they are unable to turn around for the five weeks they are incarcerated.
Pigs bred for meat are kept in overcrowded conditions with nothing to alleviate their frustration and boredom.
After a short, miserable, six-month life, pigs are transported often long distances to the abattoir, where they will face an end that is anything but humane.
Yes, the motorway crash was shocking, but we all have the power to stop that happening again by simply not buying meat and going veggie.
