YOU know autumn is beginning to set in when the calendar starts filling up with cosy social occasions such as talks etc. However, not all programmes go to plan.

The Friends of South Tyneside Libraries had expected a visit from veteran billiards player and referee Vera Selby as their guest speaker this coming Saturday, but I’ve been asked to let everyone know that Vera has had to cancel because of unforeseen circumstances.

The Friends will next meet on October 12, when they will hear from Peter Talbot on following in the footsteps of Scott to the South Pole.

Autumn in South Tyneside also brings the annual Older People’s Festival, and an eclectic programme of talks is planned by the Wednesday Heritage Club, meeting at South Shields Library.

Topics include films on working at the Tyneside Maling pottery works, the sea coal trade and the introduction of steam, and Wallsend Slipway, with an emphasis on the Mauretania.

South Shields film-maker Gary Wilkinson will also be screening one of his latest films, Lizards, about an historic feature of our coast, at the library theatre on Wednesday, October 2, and his film the Hills of Holborn at South Shields Museum on October 21.
