THE old St Hilda’s School in Shields is one that, photographically, has always tended to slip through the net a bit. But look at this.
In 1950 there was a gymnastic display held at Westoe cricket ground in the town and every junior school in South Shields was invited to send a team.
They included St Hilda’s, which was next to the old gasworks beside Waterloo Vale, before it was demolished.
This picture of the school’s team kindly comes from Don Butler, who says: “The pupils were between nine and 11 years old at the time. They’ll all be in their 70s now. I hope there are a few still around.” The picture was taken in the boys’ playground after a training session.
Not all can be identified but Don and fellow pupil Norma Curry, now Mrs Bailey – both are on it – remember Michael Wood, Alan Graham, Trevor O’Neil, Margaret Fenwick, Evelyn Alderson, Sophia Ali, Norma Downs, Mary Kaye, Fred Collier, Norman Ahlia, Joe Moffat, Norman Bayliss, Jennie Thompson and May Graham.
Also, Jacqueline Burns, Doris Burnett, Marjorie Frazer, Joe Bathgate, Etta Simpson, Sylvia Roberts, Jean Wilkinson, Sylvia Smith and Audrey Brown. Perhaps others can fill in the blanks.
