Janet’s after a taste of Wright’s proud past

THEY were as ubiquitous round here, once upon a time, as custard creams in a family selection.

I’m talking about Wright’s Biscuits, whose factory was a feature of the skyline at the west end of the town for so many years.

Do you have any memorabilia of it?

The person asking is Janet Wylie, who recently organised the exhibition at Hadrian Lodge at Simonside which was inspired by the reminiscence sessions she takes.

One of the features was a display recalling Wright’s Biscuits.

“There was a great interest in it, far more than I anticipated,” says Janet, who has actually produced a booklet about Wright’s which sells for £3.50.

She would like to hear from anyone who may have mementoes of Wright’s which they would be willing to sell or donate, or photographs relating to the company from which she can take copies.

A grant is being sought for a touring exhibition.

Says Janet: “This will include memories and photos of South Shields from learners who have been involved in life story work.

“It would be great if the Wright’s Biscuit stand could be enlarged on and could travel around with the exhibition.”

* Call Janet on 455 4830 or 07954 413 542 or e-mail her at 54Janet@live.co.uk.
