Well-suited for a trip on the Tyne?

OUTING ... but whats the story of the boat, North Eastern No 1?

OUTING ... but whats the story of the boat, North Eastern No 1?

YOU have the impression sometimes that, over the years, a great many men have enjoyed going about on the Tyne, basically having a jolly.

Not that it explains what’s going on here, mind. But the suits, the flowers in buttonholes, the dapper boaters and other hats hardly shriek ‘work,’ do they?

Or do they? Was there some kind of survey going on here, or were they awaiting an event, a launch perhaps?

Because in the background is Hawthorn Leslie’s yard at Hebburn.

The picture is another from Kevin Blair and all might become apparent if it was possible to know the story of the vessel in the foreground.

She is North Eastern No1 and she would appear to have been rather a smart lass.

The only problem being that, while Kevin has been able to track down a North Eastern, she was too small to have been this. And as for a North Eastern No1, well that eludes both of us.

He is only able to note: “There appears to be a barge with tarpaulin behind the boat with what seems like a winch.”

Can anyone shed any of the proverbial light?
