THIEVES have stolen a charity box during a raid on a South Tyneside hairdressers.
Burglars smashed their way into Aries Hair Salon through a door panel before escaping with cash destined for St Clare's Hospice in Jarrow.

The collection box had been left on a counter at the property in Hedworth Lane, Jarrow, when it was taken overnight, on September 27.

Manager Christine Flaherty, who was in Hampshire at the time, was told of the break-in after the landlord from the nearby pub contacted her.

Ms Flaherty has owned the salon for 23 years and says this is the first time she has ever experienced any trouble.

"Nothing has ever happened like this before," she said.

"I'm devastated they've taken the box for St Clare's Hospice. There was a CD player in the shop but they didn't even touch that or anything else, just the money."

It is unknown how much cash was in the box, however, it's believed to have been half-full when it was snatched.

"There must be something wrong with them for them to do something like this," added Ms Flaherty.

David Hall, chief executive of St Clare's Hospice, said: "Collection boxes are a key part of our fundraising activity and as an independent charity, we rely heavily on the goodwill of the people who either donate money or take part in fundraising.

"Every year we need to raise £1m to keep the hospice going. I'm really disappointed that people feel that charity boxes such as ours are a target for criminal activity."

Neighbourhood Inspector for Jarrow, Ian King said: ""
