PRIME Minister Gordon Brown has pledged his support to see World Heritage status come to Tyneside.
Wearmouth-Jarrow is the UK's nomination for World Heritage Site status in 2010, and, if successful, will see the dual monastic attraction of St Paul's, Jarrow, and St Peter's, Sunderland, recognised as one of the most important historical sites on Earth.
It would also see them become a tourist Mecca.
Books of Life have been set up to gather signatures in support of the bid, and the PM was just one of the high-ranking politicians to sign up during the party conference season.
Foreign Secretary and South Shields MP David Miliband, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, former Tory leader William Hague and North East minister Nick Brown have all signed the document.
A Book of Life was taken to each party conference by John Mowbray, director of corporate affairs for Northumbrian Water, who volunteered to be an ambassador for the Wearmouth-Jarrow bid.
