TRIBUTES have been paid to a retired teacher who coached young athletes in South Tyneside and encouraged youngsters to achieve their potential.
Many of Bill Wilson's protégés at Jarrow and Hebburn Athletic Club reached regional, national and international standards.
The 76-year-old, from South Shields, who died on September 15, after a long illness, was a mentor and guide to many.
Phil Grice, a former colleague and friend for almost 40 years, said: "I know Bill had three loves: teaching at Cleadon Park Secondary School, coaching at Monkton and working at Ashley Primary School."
Mr Wilson was born in Marshall Wallis Road, Laygate, the second child of Sarah and William Wilson, although their first child died at the age of two.
His father died six months before he was born, creating a tremendous bond between him and his mother, whom he lived with until she died 13 years ago.
Her second marriage, to Joe McDermott, produced his brother John, who died three years ago, and sister Kathleen Campbell.
The family home in his early life was Eglesfield Road in Laygate, next to St Jude's Church, where he was an altar boy and member of the choir.
Mrs Campbell, who now lives in York, said: "Both John and Bill were members of St Jude's Boys Club, which Bill attributed to his interest in wishing to help young people gain their full potential."
On leaving school, Mr Wilson served apprenticeships as a lift engineer and electrician, before entering the RAF during his National Service.
He entered teaching in later life, studying part-time to gain qualifications while working for the electricity board.
He taught at Cleadon Park, Whitburn and Chuter Ede secondary schools, before moving to Ashley Primary, where Mr Grice was headteacher.
He said: "He certainly did not see his time out quietly. He became loved and respected by the children, parents and staff."
Mr Wilson continued with supply work and helping with the football team until he was in his early 70s.
Mrs Campbell said: "His entire life was spent in the service of young people, not only as an educator, but in the field of athletics.
"He taught young people that running was an enjoyable pastime and that with hard work and discipline, success could be achieved."
Mr Wilson's funeral was held at St Jude's Church on September 22, where a collection was held for Jarrow and Hebburn Athletic Club.
Club secretary Alan Wears said: "He will be sorely missed, but at the same time, he has left a lot of people with some wonderful memories."
