I THINK local councils need to do a lot more to encourage responsible dog ownership.
A bylaw was introduced to stop us dog owners from letting our dogs foul on public areas, so why not introduce the same sort of thing for people who have their dogs off the lead? No matter how well a dog is trained, when it's off the lead you do not h
ave full control over its actions, thus the dog is potentially out of control in a public place.
The licence for keeping a dog should also be brought back, but this time make it more of a fee than the last couple of times it's been in place. I would gladly pay £30, or even £100 a year, for the enjoyment and companionship we get from our latest dog Poppie.
The fee is not the issue really, it's the enforcement that's needed to back it up if you are caught trying to dodge the licence. Break any of the rules and then you get banned from owning a dog. No messing.
My pup was killed in broad daylight in a public place, with children in the area, totally out of the blue, by a dog that was not only not on a leash but was about 3ft tall.
Prices of these expensive dogs are coming right down, and people are buying them without knowing exactly what their little bundle of joy will grow into.
We need to act now before an incident happens that will make us do something about it – God forbid, when a child is killed by one of these dogs.
