Amazed at council award
ON behalf of the voluntary sector, and as past chairman of the South Tyneside Training Enterprise Network, I feel duty-bound to write expressing amazement, surprise and astonishment that our council has attracted national acclaim on being the best local authority across the UK,
when it has failed to administer its responsibilities in allocating the Working Neighbourhoods Fund aimed at supporting regeneration and care, causing unnecessary restructuring of a number of well-run community organisations.
However, the council has known since November last year that these new funding mechanisms were coming into play with effect from April 1, 2008.
To date, I understand no tendering documentation process has been issued, consequently many organisations are having to face unnecessary redundancies and possible closure.
Where indeed is the audit process monitoring management services? I do just wonder if those who travelled to London's Hilton Park Hotel to receive this accolade were themselves aware of this failure?
