I AM writing to you regarding the money- grabbing tactics being used on the poor by our ex-Chancellor and current Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
At least Dick Turpin wore a mask!

The doubling of the 10p-in-the-pound tax rate hits those who can least afford it.

That is, those on low incomes (but not receiving benefits) and pensioners with incomes other than basic pension.

Brown was obviously quite aware of the implications when he announced this change, as were other politicians.

Now it is too late to change it.

What could be done, however, would be to increase the threshold for payment of tax.

This could at least help those least able to clothe and house themselves.

Malcolm Hardy,
Clennel Avenue,
Hebburn.
