Mission closure impossible
Published Date:

IT would be a shame if the Seaman's Mission in Mill Dam, South Shields, were to close (We'll stay afloat, Gazette, August 11).
My husband Maurice and I popped in there for a drink after seeing the film Mamma Mia!
Recently, too, we were there for a funeral and my husband tolled the big brass bell at the top of the stairs.
He tolled it three times – if you are a seafarer, you will know why.
In my young days in the Navy I was based at HMS Granges, and on my day off with other Wrens, we would get the boat to Harwich to the Seaman's Mission there, where all service people would go for a chat and something to eat.
Very happy memories.
