IN reply to the letter from Annie, of Boldon (Gazette, April 30), regarding the withdrawal of carrier bags from certain supermarkets.
In numerous outlets you will have to ask for, or be offered, a plastic carrier bag. More than 1bn carrier bags are used each year and end up on landfill sites after only one use.

It makes far more sense to go green, and stores are advising customers to re-use their existing carrier bags or buy a fold-up bag which can be slipped into their pockets.

Alice Street,
South Shields.
