The Tories have often been depicted as smug, self-important fossils, but, in recent years, they have turned this muggy projection around by bringing in the exuberant David Cameron as leader.
After a revival in the polls, they romped home in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, then dominated the Henley by-election that followed.
Yet despite the future looking bright for the Conservative party, David Davis, a conceited man overflowing
with arrogance, felt the need to resign as shadow home secretary over the government's 42-day detention bill.
Mr Davis probably should have realised he wasn't going to get the debate he so desperately wanted if both Labour and the Lib Dems weren't going to put forward candidates.
He comprehensively won the Haltemprice & Howden by-election earlier this month, having cost the taxpayer a whopping £200,000.
Mr Davis can now sleep at night, knowing that he wasted thousands of pounds of public money on a by-election in which 23 of the 26 candidates lost their deposits, and his closest rival for the seat was the Green Party.
Mr Davis is an overbearingly political beast who still has his eyes on Downing Street.
This civil liberties business was a chance for him to draw some attention to himself.
I have no doubt that following his victory, he will sit on the back benches, and if Labour somehow wins the next general election, Mr Davis will contest the Tory leadership with Mr Cameron.
What a total waste of public money. It's just as well we aren't heading for a recession, or we might have needed that money!
