Album review: Frank Turner - The Second Three Years
FRANK TURNER ... The Second Three Years (Xtra Mile/Epitaph)
AS the title suggests, this collection packages together odds and ends from the second three years of folk-punk singer Frank Turner’s career.
He has released four studio and one live album in the six years since he left hardcore band Million Dead, and this 22-track album is a handy companion-album to The First Three Years.
Consisting of non-album tracks from his 2010 Rock ‘N’ Roll EP, the bonus tracks from last year’s excellent England Keep My Bones LP, as well as a selection of B-sides, covers and rarities, it shows what a prodigious talent he is.
Whether he’s tackling traditional English songs like Barbara Allen, Take That’s Greatest Day or Nirvana’s On A Plain, there’s no mistaking the passion of the delivery.
The greatest compliment is that his own songs, such as Pass It Along are just as good as covers like Springsteen’s Thunder Road – and I bet you’ve never heard Build Me Up Buttercup sound quite like this! 8/10. GW
