Album review: Mark Lanegan Band - Blues Funeral
MARK LANEGAN BAND ... Blues Funeral (4AD).
FORMER Screaming Tree Mark Lanegan is often touted as a grunge legend, but he’s become so much more than that, having collaborated with Isobel Campbell, Greg Dulli and Josh Homme, among others.
It’s hard to recall any album he’s been associated with being anything less than great, so it’s saying quite a lot that this seventh solo outing is one of his strongest efforts to date.
A master-songwriter, Lanegan is well known for his perennial bleakness, and there’s plenty of that among Blues Funeral’s 12 excellent tracks.
As always, his weathered, velvety voice is at the centre of proceedings, and it’s that which makes songs such as Bleeding Muddy Water and St Louis Elegy nothing short of sensational.
He’s been in the business for 27 years now, but shows no signs of winding down, and, on this evidence, isn’t far from the peak of his powers. 8/10. AW
