Carol can help you brush up on art skills!
CREATIVE ... artist Carol White is holding a painting class in South Shields.
THERE’S nothing like setting up an easel at a picturesque spot and painting the scene – and leading art teacher Carol White has no doubts about that.
The artist, from East Boldon, is one of the most respected tutors in the North East, and has a few spaces available on her popular painting classes in South Shields.
Carol, who has always painted, has worked as a professional artist and art teacher for 13 years.
The mum-of-two started her own teaching business in South Shields, with the help of business support agency Tedco, five years ago.
Now Carol’s Art has an office in St George’s Terrace, East Boldon, and a studio in Eldon Garden Shopping Centre in Newcastle, which promotes the work of 97 North East artists.

But her real passion is getting out into the great outdoors.
She said: “The ultimate for any artist is being out in the open and painting whatever is around you. I just love it.
“And I love taking people out on my classes, rather than have them just sitting in a classroom.
“Getting out there gives you such freedom.”

She added: “Also, it’s a big step to feel comfortable having your work on show for anyone to stand and look at over your shoulder. If you can feel confident at a time like that, then you’re definitely on the right track.”
Carol, 52, believes that everyone possesses the skills to paint and draw.
She said: “We all painted as children so the basics are there. A lot of people tell me they can’t paint or that they paint like children – but that’s just because they haven’t done it since they were a child. Painting is a skill that anybody can learn. After that it just takes practice.” Carol also delivers Art as Therapy sessions at local organisations which need that kind of support, like rehabilitation centres.
She added: “Seeing the benefits that these kinds of sessions have given to people has really made it worthwhile.
“It gives people something to focus their actions on.”
She added: “Painting classes can be very therapeutic for older people too because it keeps their hands and minds busy, and it can be an enjoyable social experience as well.
“A lot of people who come to my classes say that they look forward to them every week, because it’s become more than an art class for them. It’s a social event for them to meet up with friends and like-minded people.
“My art groups are taken out and about in the borough to paint outdoors with a picnic during the summer. Art has been proven to have huge benefits to people’s wellbeing, as a hobby or therapy.”
Carol’s classes are held over 10 weeks on Wednesday mornings at St Peter’s Church in Sunderland Road, Harton Village, and on Friday mornings at Whitburn Library in Mill Lane, Whitburn.
Both classes run from 10am to noon and cost £6 per session.
