Happy Mondays kick off reunion tour in Newcastle
HAPPY MONDAYS ... Bez and Shaun Ryder pictured in their heyday.
HOT on the heels of the reunion of The Stone Roses, another of the defining bands of the baggy era have announced they are reforming.
The original line-up of the Happy Mondays chose ‘Happy Monday’ to announce they are back together for the first time in 19 years.
Bez, Gary Whelan, Mark Day, Paul Davies, Paul Ryder, Rowetta and Shaun Ryder will embark on an 11-date UK tour in May.
It kicks off at the O2 Academy in Newcastle on Thursday, May 3, and includes a massive hometown show at Manchester Arena.
Frontman Shaun Ryder said: “We all met up last week and some of the lads haven’t seen each other in over 10, 15 years.
“It’s as if we’ve never been apart – so good to all be in the same room again.
“We can’t wait now to get on tour and play the songs that made us famous.”
Happy Mondays were discovered by Tony Wilson in the Hacienda, and became synonymous with Manchester music.
They burst onto the scene with their first album, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), in 1987.
Two classic albums followed, Bummed in 1988, and Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches in 1990, which went on to achieve platinum status in the UK alone.
Their final album, Yes Please!, released in 1992, is most famous for sinking independent label Factory Records, having cost too much to make.
There have been partial reunions over the years, but now fans can expect to hear songs such as Step On, Kinky Afro, Hallelujah, 24 Hour Party People as they were meant to be.
Special guests on all dates will be another newly-reformed band from the north west, Inspiral Carpets.
Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday from (08444) 772000, or the Academy box office.
