Album review: First Aid Kit - The Lion’s Roar
FIRST AID KIT ... The Lion's Roar (Wichita)
THIS is the sophomore album from Swedish sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, and one that sees them take an enormous step up from 2009’s The Big Black & The Blue.
Moving on from that album’s campfire folk, it is an accomplished and consistent collection of songs, full of outstanding tracks.
The influence of genre heavyweights Bright Eyes is clear and shameless, with guitarist Mike Mogis acting as producer, while main man Conor Oberst guests on closer King Of The World, but this is a record with First Aid Kit’s mark stamped all over it.
The sisters’ voices are at the centre of things throughout, and work equally well on the album’s more subdued numbers as on its equally wonderful chirpier offerings.
It’s an absolute essential for anyone with an interest in folk, and arrives as the first truly great album of 2012. 9/10. AW
