Ash unveil a Christmas treat
FANS of Irish rockers Ash are in for a pre-Christmas treat after the band confirmed their only North East show this year.
The trio, who have had hits with songs like Girl From Mars, Angel Interceptor and Burn Baby Burn, are headlining a Christmas spectacular in Darlington on Friday, December 18.
The band, who have sold eight million records since they were formed in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, in 1992, will be flying in from New York, where they are now based, for the gig at Inside Out in Beaumont Street.
Ash are more usually found headlining festival stages or in much bigger venues, so it promises to be a much more intimate and sweaty affair.
Tickets are on sale now, priced 16.50 in advance, and you'd be wise to book up in advance, as they'll be 18.50 on the door.
The band reverted to their original line-up of Tim Wheeler (guitar and vocals) , Rick McMurray (drums) and Mark Hamilton (bass), after asking second guitarist Charlotte Hatherley to leave three years ago.
Most of the material they play live is from their first album, 1977, or their most recent, 2007's Twilight Of The Innocents, which they vowed would be their last.
That didn't mean they were about to split up, however. They said it merely marked a change in the way they would release their music in future.
Wheeler said: "The way people listen to music has changed. With the advent of the download the emphasis has reverted to single tracks."
True to their word, they recently embarked upon an ambitious campaign, the A-Z singles series, where they will release a new song every two weeks for a year.
The songs are available as digital downloads or extremely collectable single-sided etched 7" singles, and they're only up to 'C' if you haven't already signed up.
An A-Z tour of less-visited towns and cities was also organised, starting in Aldershot and ending with a sold-out show at Zennor Village Hall in Cornwall on Monday night.
Advance tickets for the Darlington date are available online from.ticketweb.co.uk, or in person from In Arcadia in Skinnergate, Darlington; Rocket Retro in Grange Road, Middlesbrough; Sound It Out in Yarm Lane, Stockton; or The Other Record Shop in Errol Street, Hartlepool.
