Brits nominee Laura Marling set for The Sage
SAGE DATE ... Laura Marling on embarking on her biggest UK tour yet.
ONE of the brightest stars of the British folk movement is heading for Tyneside as part of her latest tour.
Triple Mercury Music Prize nominee Laura Marling has announced her biggest tour yet next month.
It includes 11 dates around the UK, including The Sage Gateshead on Monday, March 5.
The Wisdom of Spring jaunt promises to be very different to her last live outings, the When the Bell Tolls tour, which took in some of Britain’s best-loved cathedrals.
She will be showcasing her third album, A Creature I Don’t Know, which was released to rave reviews last year.
Marling, 22 today, was born in Hampshire, and learned guitar at an early age.
Her father, who ran a recording studio, introduced her to folk music and shaped her musical taste.
Moving to London at 16, she soon became part of a cluster of bands labelled ‘nu-folk’ by the press.
She was part of the original line-up of Noah And The Whale, but left in 2008, the year she released debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim.
It was Mercury-nominated, as was the follow-up, 2010’s I Speak Because I Can.
Last February she was named best British female solo artist at the Brit Awards, and best solo artist at the NME Awards.
In the summer, Marling premiered songs from her new album at a handful of festivals, including Glastonbury, Green Man, and The End Of The Road.
She said A Creature I Don’t Know was about “love, rage, desire, family, devils, angels, devotion, betrayal, and the roles women play”, and it reached No4 on its release in September – the same as its predecessor.
Marling has again been shortlisted for a Brit Award, as best British female.
Tickets for her gig at The Sage, priced £18.50 and £25, are available from 443 4661.
