Foo Fighters to play the Arena
ONE of the biggest rock bands in the world are set to make sparks fly on Tyneside with a Bonfire Night show.
Foo Fighters will be filling the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Monday, November 5, as part of a world tour promoting their new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace.
The record – the band's sixth – is out on September 25 on Roswell/RCA, and is set to cement their reputation as one of the best rock acts around.
It marks the first time they have worked with producer Gil Norton since 1997's double platinum album The Colour And The Shape, which has just had a deluxe 10th anniversary re-release.
The Foos began as a solo project for Grohl while he was the drummer in Seattle grunge legends Nirvana.
After Kurt Cobain's death, Grohl went into a studio in Seattle to record some of his songs, playing virtually every instrument and singing all the vocal parts.
These recordings became the Foo Fighters' self-titled 1995 debut album, which made No 3 in the UK charts, and it was only then he put together a band to play the songs live.
Members have come and gone, and the current line-up is Grohl (lead vocals, guitar), Taylor Hawkins (drums), Chris Shiflett (guitar) and Nate Mendel (bass).
The band have earned a worldwide following with huge anthems like Monkey Wrench, Learn To Fly, All My Life, Best Of You and DOA.
Following their last studio effort, 2005's double-disc In Your Honor, they spent a year selling out arenas around the world on their biggest tour to date.
Last year they embarked upon a more intimate theatre tour showcasing material from In Your Honor's quieter second disc alongside acoustic-based arrangements of back-catalogue favourites.
That itself led to a new CD and DVD, Skin And Bones, and they still found time to play to the largest British concert audience of 2006, when they headlined London's Hyde Park for a crowd of 85,000 people.
Two of the Foos' albums, There Is Nothing Left To Lose and One By One, have won Grammy Awards, but Grohl has hinted that they may be moving in a different direction, while trying to keep diehard fans happy.
"The new album sounds like a Foo Fighters album, but it's definitely moving in a few different directions. It's cool man, I love it."
Tickets for the Arena gig, priced 30 plus the usual fees, are on sale now from (0870) 707 8000.
