Jimmy Webb and The Webb Brothers
AMERICAN songwriter Jimmy Webb can boast an amazing back catalogue of classic pop songs.
How about Wichita Lineman, Galveston, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Didn't We and The Highwayman for starters?
On his latest trip to Tyneside, Webb shared the vocal and instrumental duties with his singing sons, The Webb Brothers.
This proved a mixed blessing, and I often simply wanted to hear Webb senior tackle his own songs with his shaky but sensitive voice.
For this reason, the solo segment, with Webb chatting about wild times with old actor pal Richard Harris, while serenading the audience at his grand piano, proved the concert highlight.
But the show still possessed a kind of ramshackle charm, with the Webb family harmonising well on The Highwayman and that pretentious but pretty pop oddity, MacArthur Park.
It's just a pity the hall was so sparsely populated.
