Live review: Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, The Sage Gateshead

EXPERT MUSICIANS ... Rumours of Fleetwood Mac.

EXPERT MUSICIANS ... Rumours of Fleetwood Mac.

I LOVE tribute bands. You know what you’re going to get – very good musicians who have dedicated their lives to performing the songs of a band that they, and probably millions of fans, love.

And often, as in the case of Maiden England and Slack Babbath, you get an inventive name as well.

While the latter might not be the case with Rumours Of Fleetwood Mac, the former certainly was.

Playing to The Sage’s packed-out Hall One, the band brought to life the multi-million-selling works of one of the world’s legendary bands.

With the well-documented relationship troubles within the real deal stopping them from playing live regularly, a tribute act is the closest many fans will get to a Fleetwood Mac gig.

It is certainly no easy task – the Mac’s members are known for their expert musicianship and tight harmonies, but Rumours Of Fleetwood Mac step up to the plate excellently.

The faux front trio of Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and Lyndsay Buckingham were brilliant, each one playing, singing and looking like their millionaire counterparts.

The band’s back catalogue is plundered for hit after hit, including Little Lies, Don’t Stop and Rhiannon.

Album tracks like Second Hand News, You Make Loving Fun and Sara also got run outs, before a powerful Tusk brought the show to an energetic close.

There was also time for a brief visit to the Peter Green-era Mac, which will have excited any blues purists in the audience.

But I was really interested in hearing one of the most recognisable back catalogues in rock history brought to life – and I wasn’t disappointed.
