Lostprophets, O2 Academy, Newcastle
WELSH rockers Lostprophets are, without doubt, one of the biggest bands in the UK today.
This show, one of the last on their current tour in support of new album The Betrayed, sold out in a few days.
The same was the case with every other date, so expectation of the band was clearly high. They didn't disappoint.
Firstly, however, young British outfit We Are The Ocean played to a room which scarcely noticed them.
Their blend of melodic heavy screamo failed to wash with a crowd
who, in all honesty, were there for only one band.
Second act Kids in Glass Houses had more success, as their sun-kissed anthems sounded more like the headliners.
Songs like Give Me What I Want and Easy Tiger got the crowd going, as front man Aled Phillips screamed his heart out.
Lostprophets took to the stage to an intro tape that deafened everyone, with a BladeRunner-esque stage set that was as menacing as it was enthralling.
Launching into If It Wasn't For Hate, We'd Be Dead By Now, the band were all power and panache, frontman Ian Watkins militarily dressed, and with the crowd in his hands.
Old songs such as Last Summer and a truly awesome Last Train Home
were in danger of being outclassed by newer material such as Where We Belong and Darkest Blue.
Watkins himself even engaged in a comedy double-act with keyboardist Jamie Oliver, with one putting on a bra and the other a pair of women's Ugg boots.
After a mind-numbing rendition of hit single Rooftops the crowd screamed for Watkins to lead the way to old favourite Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja.
Grinning all over his face, he complied, with a cry of "Well, if you must Newcastle" and proceeded to bring the house down. Come back soon gents.
