Shake Ya Tailfeather, Customs House, South Shields
BLUES' fans were left rattled and rolled by the return of Shake Ya Tailfeather last night.
The seven-piece band, fronted by former Emmerdale star Dale Meeks, led the crowd on an eclectic trip through the greatest hits of blues and soul.
Covering everyone from The Rolling Stones to Sam and Dave, Joe Cocker to Otis Redding, Meeks pulled off almost every song off with aplomb, and proved that should the acting ever dry up, he has a definite alternative career waiting for him.
Ably supported by fellow North East actors Iain Cunningham and Wayne Miller in the band, the real star apart from Meek's larynx was the fabulous Ian 'BB' Brown on lead guitar.
They had to be on top of their game. This was perhaps the toughest crowd I've ever seen at a Customs House gig.
Thankfully with the second half appearance of the wonderful Soul Sisters, and a guest appearance by Moobs drummer Adam Barnes, an initially gloomy mood was lifted and, my God, one woman in the crowd even stood up to dance.
Come the end though, most of the crowd had followed her lead and were on their feet.
The encore of Blues Brothers classics was a joy.
Though not a full-time band, Shake Ya Tailfeather are way better than many professional outfits I've seen.
The banter is also enjoyable and genuine, and everyone seems to love being on the stage.
After such a great night, it would be hard to go away with the blues.
